HOLD--19th Century Sailor Made Ropework Basket

675.00

A wonderful 19th century sailor-made rope work basket with intricately knotted sides and openwork bottom. From sea chest handles, or beckets, to flask covers, balls and knife covers, sailors would use whatever extra cordage was available to make items both for the ship or for themselves. Personal items would be used to demonstrate their skill and mastery of marlinspike seamanship, more commonly known as ropework. This example would also be very functional with a napkin placed in it and used for bread or crackers at the table.
