Rare Large Irish Silver Drinking Cup, Vase or Champagne Bucket

7,500.00

A remarkable, fine quality, large, futuristic looking silver vase or champagne bucket made in Dublin by Weir & Sons, Irish, circa 1904.

Impressed hallmarks for the City of Dublin, Sterling Silver and the Year 1904, together with ‘Weir & Sons’.

Despite the futuristic appearance of this vessel, the design is, in fact, a historical Celtic revival. It derives from a medieval Irish communal or friendship drinking cup, called a mether, which was filled with ale or mead and passed around at feasts in banqueting halls.

Height: 10 1/2”     Width: 11 1/2”     Depth: 11 1/2”
